Definition
In New York State, obesity rates are on the rise among elementary and middle and high school students. Obesity is linked to many serious health conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and certain types of cancer. To combat these effects, schools and communities can promote opportunities for physical activity and access to healthier foods and beverages for children in preschool, kindergarten through grade 12, and into adulthood.
"The percentage of public school children with obesity. Obesity is defined as weight category greater than or equal to 95th percentile. Counties outside NYC: Grades pre-K, K, 2nd, 4th, 7th, and 10th prior to the 2019-2020 school year; grades pre-K, K, 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th starting with the 2019-2020 school year; data collected over two school years. NYC boroughs: Grades K-8th, data collected over one school year. Due to changes in SWSCR data collection during the 2019-2020 school year, estimates from the 2019-2021 school years may not be directly comparable to previous school years."
Data Sources and Measure Methods
"The Student Weight Status Category Reporting System (SWSCR) collects weight status category data (underweight, healthy weight, overweight or obese, based on BMI-for-age percentile). The dataset includes separate estimates of the percent of students overweight, obese and overweight or obese for all reportable grades within the county and/or region and by grade groups (elementary and middle/high). The rates of overweight and obesity reported are percentages based on counts of students in selected grades (Pre-K, K, 2, 4, 7, 10) reported to the NYSDOH. District, county, regional and statewide estimates are provided biennially. Data can be filtered by a variety of variables within the dataset and exported into various formats for additional analyses. Half of the public schools in New York State, exclusive of New York City, are required to report Student Weight Status data each year. It takes two years to collect a full cycle of data for all eligible school districts in the state."
