Notes on Methodology

  • The measure steward is the American Dental Association on behalf of the Dental Quality Alliance (ADA/DQA).
  • The annual reported rate captures activity during the stated measurement year (MY).
  • This measure was added to the CMS Quality Child Core Measure set in 2021 and replaced the previous dental sealant measure (SEAL).

Story Behind the Curve

The Sealant Receipt on Permanent First Molars (SFM-CH) measure examines the percentage of enrolled children who have ever received sealants on permanent first molar teeth for (1) at least one sealant and (2) all four molars sealed by the 10th birthdate.

The percent of children with at least 1 sealed molar is 60, while only 44% show all 4 first molars sealed. If any molar is treated with a filling, it is no longer a candidate for a sealant, therefore some children will not be able to achieve the same percent as those with at least 1 sealant.
