Story Behind the Curve
In March 2024, the CATCH My Breath program was piloted at Northern Middle School. The students that indicated they would remain vape free was 82% of the program participants. This was the baseline rate.
In March 2025, the CATCH My Breath program was facilitated at both Northern and Southern Middle Schools. More emphasis was placed on the addictive nature of nicotine and the harmful effects of vaping. The percentage of participants that indicated that they would remain vape free increased to 97%.
Partners
Partners for the CATCH My Breath program included the Person County Board of Education; health and physical education teachers from Northern Middle School and Southern Middle School; school principals; and Person County Schools' Nurse Supervisor.
What Works
Placing emphasis on the addictive nature of nicotine and the harmful effects of vaping appears to increase the percentage of students that indicated they would remain vape free.
Action Plan
PCHD plans to include Southern Middle School in the CATCH My Breath program in spring of 2025.
PCHD plans to continue outreach to both Northern and Southern Middle Schools in 2026.
