Story Behind the Curve
Routine, outpatient mental heathcare can help prevent mental health crises, and intensive inpatient care can be required to assist those who do experience a crisis. Montgomery County’s mental health provider to patient ratio is better than that for Ohio or the United States, but a need for additional provider remains. Youth, those with severe mental health conditions, and those with dual-diagnoses of mental health and substance use disorders are in particular need of expanded access to care. Additionally, insurance coverage can be a barrier to accessing community mental health services: more than 7 in 10 visits to a hospital for anxiety or depression were covered by Medicaid or Medicare.
