Story Behind the Curve
Suicide is one of the top causes of death. Suicide rates are highest among men and White residents but are increasing among women and Nonwhite residents. While the rate of those who die by suicide is highest in 25- to 34-year-olds, the number of suicides among youth has increased.
High school students who identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual are much more likely to think about suicide than those who identify as heterosexual. In Ohio, 14% of LGBTQ youth attempted suicide and 46% of LGBTQ youth seriously considered in the past year.
Although suicide is a complex behavior that can be influenced by many different factors, suicide is preventable. Suicide prevention requires a comprehensive approach involving both the family and the community to reduce risks and strengthen protective factors.
