Community Overdose Reversals Using Naloxone Kits Distributed
Current Value
1,466#
Definition
Total number of overdose reversals reported by participants who received naloxone from community-based organizations. While this measure is self-report and impossible to verify, it demonstrates the effectiveness of naloxone distribution.
Story Behind the Curve
Naloxone distribution & training on administration is vital to reducing overdose deaths. To evaluate the effectiveness of naloxone distribution, programs distributing naloxone are encouraged to ask program participants if they used a naloxone kit from previous encounters to reverse an overdose. Family and friends are most likely to be nearby during an overdose. By providing access to naloxone, capacity to reverse an overdose is increased.

What Works
Minimizing barriers to naloxone, training on signs of an overdose and how to administer naloxone, and building trusting relationships with community members increases the ability to reverse an overdose.
