Story Behind the Curve
Air pollution is linked to many health problems like stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, asthma, and other chronic and acute respiratory diseases. From 2022 – 2024, 10.7 million Air Quality Index (AQI)-weighted people days exceeded 100 on the AQI. This metric tracks the number of AQI-weighted days with AQI greater than 100, a level designated as unhealthy for sensitive groups. The metric reported for a given year represents a three-year average including that year and the two previous years. Therefore, the curve for this metric may look different than the curve for the number of days where the AQI exceeded 100. More information on the methodology for this metric can be found here.

What Works
Strategy
Related Strategies:
- Deploy air quality sensors throughout targeted zip codes to analyze data and equitable access to clean air.
- With data gathered from the air quality project, create targeted and informed policy recommendations and initiatives for local jurisdictions.
- Prepare for increased communication and health risks due to poor air quality days caused by increased wildfires and other environmental contaminants.
