Story Behind the Curve
The Foster Healthcare Program (FHCP) aims to ensure that every child entering the Utah Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) custody receives comprehensive healthcare oversight
Every child who enters into DCFS custody is assigned a nurse. The nurse facilitates and advocates for excellence in medical, dental, mental health, and overall well-being for children in Utah’s foster care system.
One goal for the children and youth in Utah’s foster care system is to improve their health and safety by facilitating their access to health insurance and timely completion of health care exams.
The priority for all Foster Children is establishing a safe and stable home. Many factors are associated with ensuring the child is in an optimal placement, often creating delays in scheduling and completing medical exams. The FHCP strives to support health exam completion with high percentages. Our current focus goal is 85%, with aspirations to improve outcomes and enhance the lives of Foster Children through focused and progressive healthcare oversight.
One strategy to meet the performance metric is to continue collaborative communication with DCFS caseworkers, foster parents, and caretakers before health exams are due, with consistent
follow-ups to ensure they understand the expectations for health exams to be completed on time.
