Story Behind the Curve
In Fiscal Year 2023, Juvenile Justice and Youth Services (JJYS) identified a 48% increase in the percent of youth identified as having more serious mental health indicators, and in SFY 2023, included over 50% of young people entering JJYS programs. Evidence emphasizes early mental health screening is critical for effective intervention. Each youth that enters a JJYS facility completes screeners regarding mental health concerns, including suicide risk and trauma symptoms. Results from these screeners inform staff as to any treatment or precautions that a particular youth may need. While staffing shortages and youth behavior can disrupt when these screeners are administered, it is JJYS's target to reach 100% of youth that have screeners completed within 24 hours of entering the facility.
