Story Behind the Curve
Data Definition and Methodology: This measure shows the addictions-related emergency department visit rate per 10,000 population.
Data is obtained from the Health Services Cost Review Commission (HSCRC) Case Mix Data, with addictions defined according to AHRQ CCS categories.
Public Health Significance: Emergency department visit data can be used to monitor and identify emerging trends for specific conditions and risk factors. Addictions-related ED data can describe what kinds of drugs individuals are consuming and provides a broader sense of the scope of addictions behavior than fatality data alone. Despite increases in overdose fatalities in Maryland and the US over the past decade, addictions-related ED visits have consistently decreased in Maryland in the past six years.
