The WIC food redemption rate for fruits and vegetables is the percentage of fruits and vegetables benefits issued to WIC participants that are redeemed using their Cash Value Benefits (CVB). The calculation is the total dollar amount spent on the purchase of fruits and vegetables in a given month divided by the total dollar amount issued for the purchase of fruits and vegetables benefits using CVB in that same month.
Story Behind the Curve
In August 2024, online eWIC was launched statewide. Online eWIC provides WIC clients with various features that were not previously available, such as the ability to view future benefits and the ability to update their WIC account remotely. WIC clients now have the ability to see WIC purchases on their grocery receipt and real time updates within the WICShopper app to reflect available benefits. Grocery store partners have implemented numerous improvements to make the WIC shopping experience more convenient, efficient and discreet than ever before.
There have been various participant driven strategies to increase fruit and vegetable consumption. This includes offering online cooking classes, such as Using WIC Foods and Cooking Made Easy which emphasize recipes that feature fruits and vegetables. They have also increased the allowed list of available fruits and vegetables (including fresh and frozen) to include fresh herbs. There are flyers on WIC clinic bulletin boards and online brochures that offer ideas on how to prepare and cook fruits and vegetables. In addition, with the 50th anniversary of WIC in Utah, there was a cookbook developed that shares many fruit and vegetable recipes.
