Why Is This Important?
Too many Portlanders struggle with food insecurity. 56% of Portland Public School students qualify for free or reduced price meals. Without meals at school, summer becomes the time when nearly 50,000 Portland children face hunger daily.
What Do The Numbers Show?
PP&R partners with Portland Public Schools to deliver free meals in parks during the summer, at after school community center programs and within the Schools Uniting Neighborhoods (SUN) Community Schools program throughout the year. Meals served in FY 2021-22 was unusually high due to increased federal support for two meals a day during the COVID pandemic.
How Did We Arrive at These Numbers?
Portland Parks & Recreation tracks annual meals served at parks, community centers and SUN School programs.
