Sugar Sweetened Beverage (SSB) consumption among NC high school students (Grades 9 -12 declined from 39.2% in 2015 to 29.8% in 2023. 

High school males experienced a recent rise in SSB consumption to 33.6% in 2023.

SSB consumption among high school females recently declined  to 26.2% in 2023.

Percent of high school youth reporting consumption of one or more sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) per day. [NCDPI, CDC]

Why is this Important?

Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) is directly linked to obesity, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and dental problems. Obesity is one of the largest contributors to morbidity and mortality in the United States (for both youth and adults). [HNC 2030]

Additional Information:

The NC High School Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) is administered to representative samples of randomly selected students on odd numbered years.  Survey responses are anonymous and parents may opt their child out of participating. 

The NC Department of Public Instruction selects survey questions from a CDC YRBS list used by education agencies and schools across the nation.   [NCDPI, CDC]
