Story Behind the Indicator
Suicide was among the top three leading causes of death in Polk County, between 2018-2022, for the 00-19 and 20-39 age groups. Suicide deaths are entirely preventable and directly correlated to poor mental health. Polk County has seen an overall increase in suicide mortality rates since 2012, with the second highest rate in the region as of 2022 (25.7). This is higher than both the Western NC regional mean (20.6) and the state mean (13.5), pointing to an issue of significant and urgent concern. Our ultimate aim would be to reduce suicide mortality by 100% by the next cycle.
