This growth may be influenced by public perceptions of increased crime, as well as well-publicized efforts by law enforcement and other stakeholders to address these concerns. It could also signal a return to pre-pandemic patterns of policing and charging. In FY23, detained individuals accounted for 31% of the total incarcerated population, and in FY24, this rose slightly to 31.6%, reflecting only a marginal increase.
