Story Behind the Curve

Seventy (70) individuals and families, or 95.92% out of those surveyed, reported an increase in their ability to advocate for themselves and/or for their children after receiving navigation services from CARE. Out of the seventy-three (73) surveyed, two families answered “neutral” to this question, indicating that they cannot confirm or deny if their ability to advocate for themselves and their children has improved and one family stated that they “did not know” if they have increased their ability to advocate for themselves after working with CARE. One of the families that answered they were “neutral” to this question only speaks Spanish, and they reported that in Wicomico County they do not have an increased ability to advocate for themselves, as very few professionals speak Spanish. While CARE did refer this family to programs that have portable language lines, the family still has limited access to resources and services due to the language barrier. The other two families were unsure of whether their ability to advocate for themselves and their children had increased or remained the same, after working with CARE, as the families believed they already had strong advocating abilities before working with CARE.
