Story Behind the Curve

Success Beyond Six (SB6) includes the following types of school mental health services:

  • School-based behavioral services,
  • School-based clinical services, and
  • Concurrent Education Rehabilitation and Treatment (CERT) therapeutic schools.

Each service is designed to provide different levels of support to students. Due to the high level of individualized student support that behavioral service programs and CERT schools provide, those programs typically serve a lower number of students when compared to the clinical service programs. Therefore, clinical service program data may drive some of the overall school mental health outcomes when combining these data from all SB6 programs as a result of clinical service programs serving the largest number of students within SB6.

School-based clinicians are funded through a case rate, which allows the clinician to provide direct intervention with a target number of students, and to provide mental health consultation and supports in the school/classroom. Thus, the program can positively impact students who may not be directly enrolled in SB6, yet those students are not captured in the data.

When seeing the trend over time, it’s important to note that the COVID-19 pandemic had significant impacts on the provision of SB6 services due to school closures, hybrid classrooms, student absences, staff absences and vacancies, among other impacts. The workforce challenges have continued to impact the ability of DAs to fill all contracted SB6 positions in the years following the pandemic.

Notes on Methodology

Total numbers of students served are collected from the Monthly Service Report (MSR) data system from submissions sent by Designated Agencies.
