Understanding "target growth": A student’s weekly progress monitoring score allows the program to measure their growth while receiving tutoring. This growth can be compared to the measures “target growth” which is the amount of weekly growth a student who is on target in the fall would need to maintain throughout the year to remain on target in the spring. A basic premise of Reading Corps in K-3 is that students are below their grade level target, and thus need growth rates above target growth if they are going to meet future grade level targets. In other words, these students need to make more than a year’s worth of growth if they are going to “catch up” and close their individual achievement gap. (FY18-19 End-of-Year, p.16)
Story Behind the Curve
This is an aggregate percentage countywide. It should be noted that there are notable differences between school outcomes. For example, in SY18-19, 33% of participating students met or exceeded target growth at one school, while 96% met this goal at another. Similar ranges were present in SY19-20, with ranges from 50% to 91%. As such, one way to assess our progress is to compare this countywide data with the statewide data. In SY18-19, 71% of students statewide had a weekly growth rate exceeding the target growth, meaning they were closing their individual achievement gap and catching up to their grade level targets (SY18-19 Evaluation Report, p.5). In SY19-20, 78% of students "had a weekly growth rating exceeding the target growth, which means the students were closing their individual achievement gap and catching up to their grade level" (SY19-20 Evaluation Report, p.5).

Story County Information: The Reading Corps was brought to Iowa in 2013, with United Way of Story County as one of the early champions. In fact, in the pilot year (2013), 3 of the 10 tutors statewide were placed here in Story County. The Iowa Reading Corps has continued since then through the financial and logistical support of United Way of Story County. Trained tutors are placed in elementary schools and work one-on-one with children identified as struggling readers from K-3. The following elementary schools have hosted Reading Corps tutors in the past years:
- Ames - Edwards, Fellows, Mitchell, Sawyer, St. Cecilia
- Ballard - East and West
- Colo-Nesco
- Collins-Maxwell
- Gilbert
- Nevada
- Roland-Story
In FY22-23, tutors were placed at Ames Edwards, Ames Mitchell (x 2), Ames Sawyer, Gilbert Intermediate, Roland-Story Elementary, and St. Cecilia (Ames). Nevada and Ballard applied for tutors but were unable to secure a member.
