Story Behind the Curve

FY21

  • A number of youth lacked transportation to get to jobs. In addition, internships and jobs were lost due to COVID-19 social distance mandates.
  • The priorities for some youth shifted to dealing with mental health issues and homelessness as result the percentage achieving this performance measure is lower compared to last year.

FY19

Challenges with youth obtaining employment and/or internships were:

  • 33% of the students were opened too late (May or June) in the FY for employment outcomes to be realized, transitioned to WIOA and/or ended program participation
  • 11% of the students
    • demonstrated difficulty with time management related to seeking employment
    • did not have the minimum level of education or soft skills necessary for desired employment and/or
    • had mental/behavior/substance use disorders or had other challenges that barred them from working to connect with formal employment
  • One (2%) returning student maintained employment that was counted as a positive outcome in FY18

FY18

  • Data is moving in the right direction.
  • 91% of the youth have obtained a job or internship.  
  • Youth are very interested in working and need to work (to financially support their family.)  
  • Youth lack prior work experience, direction of what they like or want to do, and soft skills training.  
  • Youth benefit from additional supportive services, career assessments, goal setting, and one on one or small group job skills training to be most successful.

What Works

FY19

  • Employment Instructor connects youth to employment and/or internships and continues to support youth during their employment/internship.   
  • Youth have access to soft skills training to prepare for the workforce.  
  • Youth were offered a certificate/credential course, Retail Industry Fundamentals Certification.  3 youth completed this course and passed the exam, earning a certification.
