Story Behind the Curve
Reducing barriers faced by youth is key to helping them secure employment or pursue higher education. Many have more than one barrier, so tackling the most pressing barrier or issue first is an important step. Some youth have significant and persistent barriers like lack of transportation and a lack of basic needs like food and clothing.
Partners
CCYSB, HSP and BERC are the main partners,as each agency offers unique programs and solutions that are not found at any one agency.
What Works
Addressing the barriers head on with the help of an engagement manager helps the youth feel valued and not judged, and also offers a level of support that most disconnected youth currently do not have.
Action Plan
Data Discussion
Youth who have completed a barrier screening also work to develop an action plan. At 90 days, this plan is reviewed in order to determine which barriers are being resolved, which are still in the way, and to address any new issues that have beeb identified.
Measurement Tool Used
The Connecting Youth barrier screening tool is being used to prioritize barriers in order to eliminate the most pressing issues first.
