Story Behind the Curve

Every three months, a GED curriculum that covers social studies, reading, science, writing, and mathematics is offered by Greenbelt CARES Disconnected Youth. The GED program is intended to evaluate Math and English WRAT (Wide Range Achievement Test) students.   Youth participants pick all or one of the areas of the core subject as a result of their WRAT score. The purpose of the program is to assist each participant from the time they join the GED preparatory program to maximize and increase their achievement score. For FY20, a total of 22 participant completed the GED Program. Completion of GED program is defined as youth who completed a component of a GED Program out of the total of youth who are eligible. Out of the 22 participant who completed the GED program, two participants took the GED test prior to COVID19 city shut down. Both program participants who took one component of the GED test past it. During COVID19, students could not take the GED test as the city shut down. As a result, no one obtained a Diploma or GED at the end of the program year. Greenbelt CARES continues to follow up with these students and encourage them to take GED test.
