Story Behind the Curve

April, May, June 2021 Q2 2021

This quarter, 431 people attended education sessions. The HNSW and Cancer Council cancer prevention sessions for the Korean and Chinese communities were a huge success. The sessions focused on cervical, breast, bowel, and liver cancer prevention, with a total of four cancer prevention events delivered this quarter. Another highlight was the education session for general practitioners in Western Sydney LHD, which was co-hosted by Storr Liver Clinic and Hepatitis NSW.  Thirty-five people had blood tests for hepatitis B and other BBVs.  Activities were carried out in the Western Sydney LHD, the Sydney LHD, and the Northern Sydney LHD.

Q4 2019

  • October and December were relatively quiet in 2019, due to the end of grant periods and Christmas.
  • 487 people attended our Hep B education sessions and our stall at events during November alone.
  • We joined in 2 events, which were the main contribution to the number of participants.
  • Migrant information day at Hurstville: many Chinese populations attended our stall, most of them speak Cantonese.
  • Hello Doctor at Granville TAFE: It was a joint initiative between Western Sydney Local Health District Multicultural Health Team, Granville TAFE, Storr Liver Centre from Westmead Hospital, Drug Health Outpatient Service from Cumberland Hospital and Hepatitis NSW. With the great support from bi-lingual volunteers from the campus (Arabic, Farsi, Dari, Mandarin, Korean), the students benefited a lot from Hep B knowledge and 42 of them were motivated to take a blood test. 73 Hep B quizzes were collected at the end of the day and around 120 education resources were given out.

Q3 2019

  • A total of 1099 people attended our HEP B activities, which include:
  • 3 stall events across two universities:  UNSW + WSU.
  • 4 community events:
  • Health and wellbeing expo at Riverwood
  • Multicultural information day at Maroubra
  • Korean
    Senior Health Info Day@Croydon Park
  • Moon Festival at Rhodes
  • One major event organised by HNSW at Club Central Hurstville
  • This is a momentum event on which we reached over 100 Chinese community members aged 40 to 60. We provided free Chinese banquet, Hep B education and children's entertainment, and full HBV blood tests and liver health scans were provided by clinical staff from St George Hospital. 46 people were screened and 7 positive cases were found (though at least 3 were not new diagnoses).

Q2 2019

  • A total of 1368 people attended our HEP B activities, which include:
  • 3 major health promotion events organised by HNSW: 2019 Korean Health Expo at Lidcombe, Chinese Seniors Health Gala at Ashfield and Baulkham Hills Family Funday at Baulkham Hills.
  • 2 community events attended: Sydney Korean Festival at Darling Harbour and USYD stall event at Lidcombe
  • All 11 education sessions were conducted during this period and 8 were for Chinese community and 3 were for Korean community.
  • MAJOR work done during this period
  • Sydney Korean Festival at Darling Harbour reaching 160
  • Chinese Seniors Health Gala at Ashfield reaching 240
  • Korean Health Expo at Lidcombe reaching 160
  • Family Funday at Baulkham Hills reaching 500

Q1 2019

We have staffed with new Mandarin speaking worker Cristina and she was established relationships with Chinese groups during her first several weeks.

She conducted 3 education sessions and the number will be increased.

During this quarter of 2019 we have reached total of 209 people with hep B messages.

We also were invited to Western Sydney University Fair along with WSHLD and we provided important knowledge of Hep B virus and liver health in Nirimba Campus and Parramatta Sth Campus.
