Story Behind the Curve

When positive gonorrhea tests are reported to the Health Department, we follow up with every patient's medical provider to determine whether the correct CDC treatment regimen was followed. Newer treatment protocols have been established due to concern about gonorrhea developing resistance. To ensure that providers are aware of the need to be vigilant in this regard, we prioritize contact with providers to ensure compliance with treatment regimens.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, data is not availalbe to update this measure.

What Works

Gonorrhea rates in Vermont are relatively low. When cases of gonorrhea are reported, the Health Department has the capacity to follow up with providers and patients. Quick follow up and open lines of communication with medical providers to determine if the patient's treatment regimen is correct helps ensure that patients receive effective treatment that reduces the likelihood of resistant gonorrhea. The Health Department also contacts patients post-treatment to check on their status and to offer partner elicitation and notification. Notification of sexual partners can identify additional cases and bring others into systems of diagnosis and treatment.

Strategy

This approach works. The Health Department will continue to follow these protocols in order to ensure that at least 90% of gonorrhea cases are properly treated.
