Why Is This Important?

Depression can be a debilitating condition for all ages and may not be well recognized in youth. A variety of screening tools have been developed and successfully used to screen for depression. Although not all youth who are depressed will consider suicide, screening and awareness of a suicidal ideation is also an important component of the youth’s treatment by both medical and mental health professionals.
