Story Behind the Curve
The suicide rate has increased between 2005 and 2011 in the 25 to 34 year old age group, with a 45% increase since 2007. The rate in this age group took a steep downward turn between 2011 and 2014, but rose sharply in 2015. The rates are subject to vary based on small numbers (for example there were 29 suicides in this age group in 2014 and 51 suicides in 2016. Even if 2014 is an anomaly or outlier, it still doesn't explain why it jumped up to 12.0 per 100,000 people in 2015, the highest rate in 12 years. Suicide is one of the top causes of injury death in Connecticut. The Healthy CT 2020 objective is to reduce the age-specific rate by 10%. Updated as of 02/24/2020. Next update March 2021.
