Story Behind the Curve

The suicide rate in the 45 to 54 year old age group has increased steadily since 2005.  Other than a brief 2-year decrease in 2012 and 2013, the rate rose sharply again in 2014 and remains high.  Overall, males are 1.6 times more likely than females to die from suicide; about one-third of suicides involve firearms, although older males are more likely to use firearms to die by suicide. The Healthy CT 2020 objective is to reduce the age-specific rate by 10%.
