% of Mothers beginning prenatal care in first trimester (Indicator)
Current Value
81.0%
Definition
Story Behind the Curve
The number of mothers beginning prenatal care in the first trimester has been gradually increasing over the past several years for the following reasons:
- Affordable new programs allow uninsured women to get prenatal care.
- Programs cut from local hospital
- Education efforts focused on targeted populations.
BUT, much more needs to be done. The percent is still much lower than it should be because:
- Many young women who get pregnant are still not in medical homes themselves.
- Awareness of the importance of early care and availability of no-cost programs is still not high enough.
