Employment was identified as an important indicator which shows how well Māori are thriving. Although it was agreed that the rate of employment was improving, it is still not an acceptable level, especially in terms of the percentage of Māori in higher paying jobs.
Factors identified that may be affecting the Māori employment rate include:

- Lack of transferable skills
- Influx of skilled migrants
- Children leaving school too early - education system failing Maori
