The Annual Update of Key Results 2015/16: Auckland Regional Dental Service New Zealand reports:

The data values reported form the baseline for this indicator and are sourced from Bede Oulaghan - CMH Data Analyst . The data's primary source is the Auckland Regional Dental Service (ARDS) who provide the information to Bede at a 'clinic suburb' level rather than domicile. And so to determine where a child belongs a filter is applied to the data where a clinic suburb = 'Otara' and 'Flatbush'. Filtering in this way means that the data may not be a perfect match if compared with the domicile codes used for other Thriving Otara indicators. The data is reported annually about April each year.

Dental caries, also known as tooth decay, cavities, or caries, is a breakdown of teeth due to activities of bacteria. Simple sugars in food are these bacteria's primary energy source and thus a diet high in simple sugar is a risk factor. Caries is also associated with poverty.
What's helping to reduce the number of children presenting with tooth decay
- community based health system and delivery
- marketing using our HERO champions to access unhealthy options
- some schools promoting healthier food/drink options e,g, Yendarra Primary
- dental vans in early childhood centres
- consistent programmes in place e.g. Mighty Mouth
- strong leadership and advocacy
- better data available
What's not helping to reduce the number of children presenting with tooth decay
- poorly designed health system
- poor access to good nutrition
- too many alternative drinks that are sugar based
- cheap affordable convenient lunch packs on sale that are not nutritious
- cost of living
- transition to school - no continuity of oral health programmes
- lack of understanding that care of FIRST teeth is as important as adult teeth - doing so is good for establishing good oral hygiene habits
