Story Behind the Curve
The "other" category are deaths due to illicit drugs (excluding heroin), prescription drugs in combination with other drugs or alcohol (excluding heroin), and other ingested, injected, or inhaled substances.
Why Is This Important?
Although opioid overdose deaths are increasing, not all drug related deaths are caused by opioids. Overdoses happen when a toxic amount of a drug, or combination of drugs, overwhelms the body. People can overdose on various substances not related to opioids, including alcohol, Tylenol (acetaminophen), or a mixture of drugs. Taking more than one kind of drug at a time can increase the risk of overdose.
