Story Behind the Curve
The number of babies born to families in Southington jumped back up in 2024 compared to 2023 which was a return to the fairly level 2016 to 2018, pre-pandemic numbers.
There was a large spike in 2021 which continued into 2022, all of these babies were conceived during the Covid19 pandemic. An increase in 52 babies in one year is 14% and our community will be feeling the impact of this for many years as these children enter the school system. In the near-term it has exasperated the shortage of openings at childcare providers, pediatricians and enrichment activities for infants and toddlers. Per CT childcare licensing laws, there is a ratio of 1 teacher for every 4 infants.
The past 18 years is shown on this chart.
