Story Behind the Curve
This indicator shows the rate of emergency department visits related to substance abuse disorders* (per 100,000 population). Substance abuse problems can place a heavy burden on the healthcare system, particularly when persons in crisis utilize emergency departments instead of other sources of care when available. In Harford County, there were 27 emergency department visits per 1000 for substance-related disorders in 2021. The rate has decreased in the past 5 years but Harford County continues to work towards minimizing substance-related emergency visits.
*Diagnoses include alcohol-related disorders and drug-related disorders.
