What is this about?
The cost of renting private sector property in Jersey is monitored through the Jersey Private Sector Rental Index. This indicator tracks the average annual change in the Index. Historically, the Index was compiled using prices recorded by the Population Office but a a change in law meant that this method ended in 2012. From June 2015, Statistics Jersey restored the Index using advertised rental prices collected from a variety of both internet and classified sources. The resulting mix-adjusted average rental price is converted into the Jersey Private Sector Rental Index (based to 100 for calendar year 2002).
On a calendar year basis, private sector rental prices advertised in Jersey in 2020 were 3% higher than in 2019. This followed upon a 7% increase in the previous year.
