What is this about?
This indicator uses data from the Jersey School Survey, which every Jersey child in school Years 6, 8, 10 and 12 has the opportunity to take part in. The overall results show increasing use of alcohol with age, so this indicator focuses on the alcohol use of 14 to 15 year-olds to track changing behaviours over time. Participants are asked 'Alcohol consumption: which statement best describes you?' and given a choice of the following responses: never drunk alcohol; had alcohol a few times; only drink on special occasions; drink alcohol occasionally; drink alcohol regularly.
In 2021, 5% of Year 10 participants responded either that they drink alcohol occasionally or regularly. This shows a significant reduction compared to 2010, when a third of 14 to 15 year-olds reported occasional or regular drinking. The proportion who reported never having drunk alcohol increased from 9% in 2010 to 30% in 2021.
