Story Behind the Curve

To reach UWSC's bold goal, an additional 40 youth from underserved populations should be provided with access to summer enrichment programs annually, thru 2025.

Unfortunately, there was a dramatic decline in youth served from Summer 2019 to Summer 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The majority of programs canceled in-person summer programming. Those that operated had to reduce capacity to maintain social distancing. Thankfully, in Summer 2021 many programs were able to resume, and we saw a 17% increase in underserved youth served over our baseline year. We also were happy to be able to include both Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts' data in FY20-21; for the first time, they both started reporting on camp and membership scholarships. This data will help UWSC provide a fuller accounting of our impact on those with greatest need in our county.

Partners

The United Way of Story County funds many summer enrichment programs: All Aboard for Kids, ACPC Summer Enrichment, ACPC Reading Buddies, Boy Scouts (incl. summer), Boys & Girls Club summer enrichment, CampFire, Girl Scouts (incl. summer enrichment), Raising Readers Harrison Barnes Reading Academy summer programming, and YSS Summer Enrichment. Our partners currently report disaggregated data in a number of different ways, all of which help us determine the number of children served from "underserved" or historically marginalized populations. In order to arrive at this number, then, we have used known free-and-reduced price lunch figures as a proxy for "underserved" learners. The following agencies report FRPL numbers: Boys & Girls Club, CampFire, YSS. We also have used numbers of camper scholarships for Story County reported by All Aboard for Kids, Boy Scouts,* and Girl Scouts. Finally, we have used known percentages of families at 200% or less of the federal poverty level (reported on ASSET ABF-2) to extrapolate additional "underserved" children: ACPC (14.69% of clients served in FY2018-19) and Raising Readers (12.34% of clients served).

* Note: Boy Scouts' data is included effective FY20-21 and beyond. We used the the qualifier ‘more than’ on our baseline number as we did not yet have complete data.*
