Story Behind the Curve

Baltimore County Department of Health and Human Services inspects retail food service facility establishments in accordance with county, state, and federal law. The county food regulations were adopted to establish basic food safety and employee health standards, ensure basic food handling and preparation practices, and implement core equipment and structural criteria.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, it is especially important to uphold the enforcement of food safety compliance and maintain regular inspections to reduce the incidence and spread of communicable diseases.

What Works

Strategy

Environmental health inspectors have a strategic goal to increase the number of mandated inspections in retail food service facilities to 80%, but also to ensure that 100% of all high and moderate facilities have had a comprehensive inspection each fiscal year. These inspections are mandated by Maryland Department of Health. Baltimore County HHS tracks all priority food inspections on a quarterly basis. Regular retail food facility inspections are a key part of reducing the incidence of foodborne illness/outbreak and spread of communicable diseases.
