Description

Data were obtained from the Richmond County Health Department Patagonia Electronic Health Record as reported to the NC Department of Health and Human Services. This data includes females under 15 years of age to 19 years of age of those who attend the Richmond County Health Department Family Planning Clinic.

Story Behind the Curve

The Richmond County Health Department, in response to the high teen pregnancy rates as compared to NC state rates, began a ninth and eighth-grade teen reproductive health curriculum during the 2016-2017 school years that continues today. All Richmond County ninth-grade classes, including the Richmond County Early College students, were educated in teen health using the Reducing the Risk (RTR) curriculum. All Richmond county eight-grade students were taught teen health using the Promoting Health Among Teens-Abstinence Only (PHAT-AO) curriculum.

Partners

Eighth and Ninth-grade health teachers and REACH curriculum facilitators collaborate to provide systematic and effective ways for adolescents to learn the essential knowledge and critical skills needed to decrease sexual risk behaviors, promote reproductive health, and connect students to health services in the community.

  • Improving Community Outcomes for Maternal and Child Health (ICO4MCH):

Richmond County Health Department collaborates with the ICO4MCH to use evidence-based strategies in our communities to improve birth outcomes, reducing infant mortality and the overall health of children ages birth to 5.

What Works

  • Promote Richmond County Health Department services and resources to the community
  • Provide reproductive health education appropriate for the age levels
  • Social Media campaigns for the reproductive health
  • Provide teens with evidence-based teen pregnancy prevention programs
  • Collaboration with other agencies to promote community education, knowledge, and resources

Strategy

The Richmond County Health Department provides teens with evidence-based, age-appropriate teen pregnancy prevention programs, a vital component of the communitywide initiatives of the CAG and FYL.  These initiatives involved engaging all stakeholders to prevent teen pregnancy by educating the teen population about reproductive health and the necessary resources. Evidence-based teen pregnancy prevention programs have been shown, in at least one program evaluation, to have a positive effect on preventing teen pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections, or sexual risk behaviors.  Other strategies include mobilizing necessary resources, disseminating information, generating support, and fostering cooperation across public and private sectors in the community.
