Definition
Data for cases and hospitalizations is reported to ODH via the Ohio Disease Reporting System (ODRS), and verified mortality data is reported via the Electronic Death Registration System (EDRS).
Story Behind the Curve
Following the introduction of COVID-19 vaccines in December 2020, and widespread immunizations in the spring of 2021, the death rate dropped significantly as the majority of the highest-risk individuals got vaccinated. As the highly infectious Delta variant spread during the late summer and fall of 2021, case rates and deaths climbed again. As the Omicron variant spread in the fall and winter, deaths reached their highest level in January 2022.
