Story Behind the Curve
Fruits and vegetables are good sources of complex carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and other substances that are important for good health.(147) There is probable evidence to suggest that dietary patterns with higher intakes of fruits and vegetables are associated with a decreased risk for some types of cancer,(148–150) cardiovascular disease,(151) and stroke.(152) Although data are limited, an increased intake of fruits and vegetables appears to be associated with a decreased risk of being overweight.(153–155) However, most youth do not meet the recommendations for fruit and vegetable consumption.(156–158) In 2017, during the 7 days before the survey, 31% of high school students nationwide had eaten fruit or drunk 100% fruit juice two or more times per day and 14% of students had eaten vegetables three or more times per day.(159) (from ADE report)
