Story Behind the Curve

We are currently developing data for this program in Richmond County.

Partners

  • Region 6 Tobacco Collaboration

The collaborative works to improve the health of North Carolina residents by promoting smoke-free environments and tobacco-free lifestyles. Our goal is to build the capacity of diverse organizations and communities to implement and carry out effective, culturally appropriate strategies to reduce deaths and health problems due to tobacco use and secondhand smoke.

We provide information about evidence-based ways to reduce the toll of tobacco/vaping use on N.C. communities and to promote tobacco-free living.

We provide free cessation services to any North Carolina resident who needs help quitting commercial tobacco use, including all tobacco products offered for sale and not tobacco used for sacred and traditional ceremonies by many American Indian tribes and communities. Quit Coaching is available in different forms, which can be used separately or with another program to help any tobacco user give up tobacco.

What Works

There are a variety of evidence-based approaches to treating nicotine addiction, and not every method works for everyone. In addition, approaches may vary depending on the type of nicotine delivery system (e.g., cigarettes, dip, e-cigarettes), patient characteristics, length of time using nicotine, and amount of daily nicotine.

Effective treatment administers to the needs of the individual, not just their addiction to nicotine, and should include:

  • Motivational interviewing
  • Behavioral therapy (e.g., identifying triggers, building skills to resist cravings)
  • Nicotine replacement therapies or medications
  • Personalized quit plan
  • Personalized support messages via email and text
  • Plan evaluation and modification as necessary
  • Preparation in the event of relapse or slip

Strategy

Strategies include ongoing promotion of the NC Quitline services via social media, radio ads, flyers, billboards, and patient counseling within our clinics.  NC Quitline offers quit coaching in different forms, which can be used separately or together, to help any tobacco user give up tobacco.  The registration can be done via  1-800 number (1-800-QUIT-NOW or 1-800-784-8669), Texting (Text READY to 200-400), or online at QuitlineNC.com.  Native American Tobacco users, outside of ceremonial usage, can call a special dedicated line (1-888-7AI-QUIT or 1-888-724-7848) for culturally sensitive quit counseling. Interpretation services are available for many languages and a teletypewriter number (TTY:1-877-777-6543) is available for those who are speech or hearing impaired.  Quit coaches are trained Tobacco Cessation Specialists who understand the tobacco users' addiction and withdrawal processes.  All sessions are non-judgment and positive in nature to help the client feel more confident in their ability to permanently quit tobacco.  Sessions include helping the client identify their particular triggers for smoking (i.e., dipping, chewing, vaping), creating a quit plan that includes alternate activities instead of smoking, nicotine replacement therapies, or medications.

Tobacco use and dependence often require repeated intervention and long-term support to help patients quit. Effective treatments and resources include:

  • Counseling and medication—Each is effective when used alone, and using them together can more than double the chances of quitting
  • Combining medications—Compared to using a single form of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), combining long-acting NRT (e.g., patch) with a short-acting NRT (e.g., lozenge) increases the chances of quitting
  • Tobacco quitlines—Proactive counseling from quitlines increase the chances of quitting when used alone or together with cessation medication. Text messaging and web-based cessation interventions can also help people successfully quit smoking
