Definition. This indicator measures whether (a) parents or family members read to their children at least three times a week, or whether parents encourage their children to read or (b) parents or family members report that they child read to themselves three or more times a week.

The importance of reading to young children in the scope of their development, is addressed in several of the parent workshops in the Universidad de Padres offerings:
Abriendo Puertas/Opening Doors-is a research, evidence-based parenting education program, created by Latino parents for Latino parents. This national program has been translated into English to support all parents. Within the program, parents hear the latest data on brain development and the most important domains for learning. Reading and talking to your children is the cornerstone of the activities and information provided. Parents discover the power of books, for acquiring vocabulary, early literacy skills, bonding with children. Parents make books, incorporate singing, reciting rhymes, access to online resources to support this domain. Participants received books for the home.
Puppetry Workshop: This supplemental workshop, through our partners in ARTS, fostered the role of using puppetry as a means of engaging in retelling of stories, having conversations and bonding with children. Books were raffled off at the end of the workshop.
Kinder Minutos You Tube Videos: were developed as short demonstrations in the value of reading and talking with young children. The links to the SDPN created videos were sent to parents and advertised through the school settings.
