Story Behind the Curve

  • The Applied Behavior Services team utilizes three evidence-based assessments and curricula which include: Early Start Denver Model (ESDM), Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP), and Promoting the Emergence of Advanced Knowledge (PEAK).  Figures 1, 2, and 3 represent the average scores for clients at re-assessment dates (6-month intervals).
  • ESDM is a comprehensive, early intervention approach for toddlers with Autism Spectrum Disorder ages 0-5 years.  It should be noted that ABS clients whose programming is guided by ESDM often receive early intensive ABA services which is associated with clinically significant outcomes.  Figure 1 depicts that early intensive ABA services for ABS clients is linked to clinically significant progress.  It should also be noted that the average 30-month and 36-month score is only representative of one client.
  • VB-MAPP is a learning, language, and social skills assessment and curriculum program that encompasses developmental milestones for children ages 0-4 years.  VB-MAPP is primarily utilized to support school readiness and the slight decline seen in Figure 2 after 24-48 months of service is representative of a decrease in ABA service hours as children transition to school full time and is only representative of one client for the this fiscal year.  This data supports the effectiveness of early intensive ABA service hours.
  • PEAK is an assessment and curriculum program that focuses on teaching verbal behavior and related life skills through targeting derived relational responding and is primarily utilized for children ages 2-8 years.  Figure 3 depicts steady progress for clients utilizing PEAK and supports the positive effects of derived relational learning for clients receiving intensive ABA service hours and for school age clients receiving less intensive ABA service hours.  It should be noted that the average 24-month score depicted is only representative of four clients.
  • Figure 4 represents the percentage of maladaptive behaviors that were targeted and reduced for all clients.  As seen in figure 4, 100% of targeted maladaptive behaviors reduced for clients in FY 22.
  • ABS served a total of 23 clients during FY 22.
  • The increased positive change represented is attributed to the utilization of behavior analytic interventions which are evidence-based and include discrete trail learning (DTL), natural environment teaching (NET), shaping, chaining, video modeling, and the use of reinforcement.
