Story Behind the Curve
The indicator measures the number of Local Health Departments in Indiana that is accredited by PHAB.
The Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the continuous quality improvement of Tribal, state, local, and territorial public health departments.
PHAB promotes and protect the health of the public by advancing the quality and performance of all public health departments in the United States through national public health department accreditation. PHAB’s vision is a high-performing governmental public health system that will make the United States a healthier nation.
As of May 20, 2022, a total of 40 state, 305 local, 5 Tribal, 1 statewide integrated local public health department system (Florida), and 2 Army Installation Departments of Public Health have achieved five-year initial accreditation or reaccreditation through the Public Health Accreditation Board, bringing the benefits of PHAB accreditation to 91 percent of the U.S. population.

What Works
Meeting the unique and specific needs of the health department.
Challenges
Local health departments are at various stages of efforts and interest in accreditation. Funding and staff time have been an ongoing challenge that our local health departments face in order to implement the best practices outlined in accreditation standards.
Corrective Action
IDOH is considering expanding the accreditation team and considering funding assistance to LHDs.
