The number of Public Transport options
Current Value
66
Definition
Count of transportation options as per Indiana Public Transit Systems
Story Behind the Curve
This update from 63 to 66 transit systems reflects a change in the administrative divisions of existing systems. The Federal Transit Administration requires funding to be distributed differently based on a providers status as Urban (FTA Section 5307) or Rural (FTA Section 5311). Due to changes in population, three of our providers had counties that were required to transition from being considered Rural to being considered Urban. Since each of these systems had other counties which remained rural, these rural counties branched off to become separate systems, thus increasing the total count of transit systems in the state by three. The update from 63 to 66 systems does not indicate an increase in coverage or availability of Public Transit during this time.
