Current Value
36%
Definition
BRFSS relies on telephone surveys to collect data about U.S. residents in all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia and three U.S. territories regarding their health-related risk behaviors, chronic health conditions, and use of preventive services. BRFSS completes more than 400,000 adult interviews each year, but it must be noted that this data is self-reported and not drawn from health records. It must also be noted that this self-reported data encompases the entire state of North Carolina and not specifically Lee County. See the link below for further details on BRFSS.
Story Behind the Curve
Social determinants contribute to obesity and overall poor health. Lee County residents have a lower meadian income that the North Carolina state average ($57, 943 to $62, 513 respectively), and the poverty level is above the state average. Current rates of inflation, food deserts, and lack of transportation contribute to the obesity rates.
