Story Behind the Measure

The "Story Behind the Curve" helps us understand the causes and forces at work that explain the data behind the number of awareness campaign items released. 

Throughout this CHIP cycle, we will release awareness campaigns and prevention information into our community to raise awareness on mental health disorders and issues, reduce stigma surrounding mental health, and seek to educate the public through these means. 

[How Much] What's Helping What We Do? These are the positive forces at work in our strategy/ program that influence how much we do

  • Availability of mental health awareness toolkits

  • Interest and support for prevention events such as Climb Out of the Darkness Postpartum Mood Disorder awareness 

  • Support and buy-in from local organizations, agencies, and stakeholders for promoting the  information

[How Much] What's Hurting What We Do? These are the negative forces at work in our strategy/program that influence how much we do.

  • Overabundance of information on all topics available through social media, news outlets, etc

  • Agency and organization capacity to support these efforts

  • Stigma around mental health

  • Making the issue relatable

  • Innovative ideas that grab attention for the awareness campaigns

  • Stigma around mental health

  • The daily stressors of life, including rural location, low access to services/resources, housing, transportation, etc

The following actions have been identified by our Healthy Carolinians of Jackson County, community members and stakeholders as ideas for what can work for this performance measure to make a difference on this issue.

  • Outreach to older population through Department on Aging

  • Partnering with schools and students to promote awareness campaigns that are relatable

  • One large prevention campaign that extends the entire CHIP cycle but grows and changes as the time goes on

These are no-cost and low-cost actions and approaches that we think can make a difference for this performance measure.

  • Free social media posts

  • Events free to the public that have relatively low-cost for agencies to support

  • Health Educators promoting education for free within the school system
