Story Behind the Curve

In the state of Ohio, over 10,000 individuals will be experiencing homelessness in the next year.

In Lucas County, Ohio, that number of individuals experiencing homelessness has ranged between 383 to 622 in the past 8 years. In 2022, that number increased by 30% from the prior year.

The effects of homelessness are higher rates of victimization, poor health, loneliness and depression that can result in other issues such as chemical dependency crime and other issues.

To address the issues, Lucas County, Wood County and United Way of Greater Toledo has helped fund several programs that have provided temporary housing for individuals who do not have a place to sleep. However, currently Lucas County is not only seeing a rise in homelessness, they are also seeing a decrease in shelter care facilities, resulting in more individuals on the street.

What Works

Emergency shelters offer a short term solution to homelessnes. However to elminate homelessness, the individual will need a varaity of services ranging form legal services, employement assistance and mental health services to help them gain permanent shelter.

Federal Housing assistance also help provide shelter through voucher programs  along with community programs that work with individuals to prevent homelessness before it happens. This can happen through programs such as Habitate for Humanity who help rebuild houses along with rental and utility assistance programs.
