Measure Definition

This data is from the National Survey on Children's Health (NSCH) National Performance Measure 13.2. The NSCH is a national survey, funded and directed by the Health Resources and Services Administration's (HRSA) Maternal and Child Health Bureau. The survey is designed to produce national and state-level data on the physical and emotional health of children who are 0-17 years old in the United States. Households are picked at random and contacted by mail and asked if they have children younger than 18.  Participants complete the survey online or on paper.

This measure reflects participants' answers to the following question:

During the past 12 months, did this child see a dentist or other oral healthcare provider for any kind of dental or oral healthcare, age 1-17 years?

Data is collected each year, but the NSCH suggests to combine 2 years of data for the best estimates. Each data point is for that year and the prior year.

Story Behind the Curve

This survey shows that just over 80% of Utah children have received dental/oral care in the past year. While, above the national average, this still indicates that 20% of Utah children are not receiving this vital service. These numbers can be improved, but it will take time and a multifactorial approach.  The Oral Health Program is developing a State Oral Health Improvement Plan and intends to use education and outreach to encourage people to get dental care.
