Story Behind the Curve

Author: Emergency Medical Services Program, Vermont Department of Health
The number of licensed Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel in Vermont has remained steady despite challenges. These include national challenges in workforce development and retention, and the increasingly complex nature of patient care in the rural setting. The EMS Program is continually working to recruit and retain licensees, and maximizing availability of EMS education. Many EMS personnel are volunteers.
Having adequate numbers of EMS personnel ensures that timely, effective, quality emergency services are available for all Vermonters.
There is no set target number for this measure as the need for personnel across the state varies over time.
Why Is This Important?
The Vermont Office of Emergency Medical Services works on behalf of Vermonters to ensure that the EMS system is adequately equipped and prepared to provide the best out-of-hospital emergency and interfacility transport care possible. There are nearly 180 ambulance and first responder agencies in the state, and many of our EMS services rely on volunteers.
