Measure Definition
This measure reflects the percentage of Utah adults who said they saw a dentist in the past year. This is collected based on their response to the following question on the Utah Department of Health and Human Services Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS).
How long has it been since you last visited a dentist or a dental clinic for any reason?
The BRFSS is a health telephone survey that collects data from individuals who are 18 and older. State data is available on health-related risk behaviors, chronic health conditions, and access to care.
Data is collected for this question in even years.
Story Behind the Curve
This survey shows that just over 70% of Utahns have received dental/oral care in the past year. While, above the national average, this still indicates that 30% of Utahns are not receiving this vital service. These numbers can be improved, but it will take time and a multifactorial approach. The Oral Health Program is developing a State Oral Health Improvement Plan and intends to use education and outreach to encourage people to get dental care.
